Yesterday
It is July 1640, and Captain Turner of the New Haven colony purchases the Stamford area from native Chief Ponus. The price? Twelve coats, hoes, hatchets, glasses and knives, four kettles, and four fathoms of white wampum. In 1641 settlement began when 29 families arrived to settle along the Rippowam River. From these small beginnings, the City of Stamford began to take shape.
