Name: Dan Skodol
Title: VP, Data Science and Analytics
Describe your role: My team and I wear many hats. We’re continually researching, designing, and prototyping innovations for our product suite, such as Insight Score and Dynamic Room Type Pricing. Last year we took on the BI and Reporting responsibility, helping our clients glean valuable insights from the hordes of data available through our integrations. We support Sales and Marketing with content creation, thought leadership articles, blogs, and webinars, and useful tools to help measure the ROI of using our products. Finally, we engage more directly with certain clients to assist with more advanced questions and projects pertaining to our products’ data science capabilities.
Where are you located? Denver, Colorado
Tell us an unknown fact about where you are based: Surprisingly, there are many misconceptions about the weather in Denver being cold and snowy all the time because it’s high in elevation and near mountains. But really Denver itself is quite dry and we have 300 days of sunshine every year.
What attracted you to Cendyn? My previous company, Rainmaker, was acquired by Cendyn in 2019. But I immediately picked up on how good a fit I was for Cendyn, and how similar the cultures were. I joined a team without any former Rainmakers on it and still felt I belonged with Cendyn from day one.
How do your strengths play into the work you do? I’ve always understood the value of making informed, data-driven business decisions, versus relying solely on “gut” or intuition. Analytics can guide decision-makers to what might be a counter-intuitive but still correct decision, which I’ve often said is where the greatest value of solutions like ours lies. If everything that an automated, prescriptive system recommended was intuitive or expected, clients really wouldn’t need it.
What do you like most about working at Cendyn? I enjoy working with the people here – we are a hospitality company at heart and it shows through the camaraderie of everyone here.
Favorite Cendyn moment: The Sales kickoff in January of 2020 was my first time meeting a large group of Cendyn team members at once. It was a productive day of meetings, presentations, and discussions. Bowling with the group afterwards was also a lot of fun!
Define hospitality in your own words: Hospitality is people providing positive, memorable experiences for other people.
Most memorable moment at a hotel: Four generations of my family have been visiting one of our customers, Mohonk Mountain House in Upstate New York, every year since I was a baby. We’ve seen the resort grow and change just like we have. We’ve been there so many times that our visits and shared experiences there all just blend together in my head, and every time we arrive it’s like we never left. There’s no single memory that necessarily stands out above the rest – all the special times we’ve shared there together as a family over the years create one long “memorable moment” in my mind.
What do you like to do for fun? Cooking, skiing, running, and building big LEGO models with our older son.
Parting words of wisdom: I believe that learning is important at all stages of one’s life and career. If you’re not learning, you’re not growing.
